I’ll add one more factor to consider — most publishers need 6-9 months from the receipt of a manuscript to publish a book. They are bound by their marketing seasons as well, so for example they would rather publish a business-oriented book in January than November. If you want greater control over the timing of your book’s publication, you should consider self-publishing.

Comment on Why Should You Keep Your Book’s Copyright? by Jim Bouchard https://thoughtleading.com/keep-books-copyright/#comment-82 Thu, 03 Apr 2014 12:16:50 +0000 https://thoughtleading.com/?p=3541#comment-82 Ken-

You’re absolutely right and this is important advice!

First of all, I’m wary of any professional negotiation where one party or the other questions why any point of concern on the part of the other party would be a “big deal.” The fact is…it is! At least to the person with the concern!

Copyright is a big deal and as you point out, in this age of electronic publication, it’s even more important. Surrendering a copyright can give legal leverage to the publisher when it comes to selling rights for any number of uses.

No- keep your copyright! Technically, you license the publisher to certain, often exclusive rights during the contract period…but do NOT give up your copyright!

If that were a deal breaker…I’d walk!

Best Thoughts! Sharing your post now…
Jim
