First of all, I&#039;m wary of any professional negotiation where one party or the other questions why any point of concern on the part of the other party would be a &quot;big deal.&quot; The fact is...it is! At least to the person with the concern!

Copyright is a big deal and as you point out, in this age of electronic publication, it&#039;s even more important. Surrendering a copyright can give legal leverage to the publisher when it comes to selling rights for any number of uses.

No- keep your copyright! Technically, you license the publisher to certain, often exclusive rights during the contract period...but do NOT give up your copyright!

If that were a deal breaker...I&#039;d walk!
